Once installed, a dark gap may appear at a joint, or merchandise near the connection may look darker than items on either side. Reviewing these issues means looking at fixture ends, cabinet construction and the light reaching the products together.

We recommend defining how continuity will be viewed, then marking cabinet divisions, fixture ends and emitting surface ends on the same drawing. A mockup containing the actual joint lets the team assess whether the lighting meets the intended result under normal display conditions.

1. Identify where the dark gap appears

“There is a dark gap at the joint” can describe several different observations. Record them separately before discussing adjustments.

What you see

Where to look first

What to review

A break in the emitting surface at the connection

The fixture directly, or its image in a reflective surface

The actual emitting surface ends, end construction and space between sections

Darker merchandise or backing near the joint

The illuminated surface, compared with either side

Whether light from the ends covers that area, and whether cabinet parts or props obstruct it

Noticeable brightness or color differences between sections

Adjacent sections and the complete display

Whether configurations, control settings and installation conditions match

An apparently continuous emitting surface still needs a check of the merchandise lighting. Some concealed arrangements principally require continuous illumination across the products, without customers seeing a complete luminous line directly.

For example, shadows on a bag may also relate to its height, pockets and position. A dark area near a cabinet division does not by itself establish a joint problem. Use our bag display lighting guide to identify the product details that need to remain visible.

2. Mark cabinet divisions, fixture ends and emitting surface ends separately

On a plan or elevation, identify cabinet divisions, the physical ends of each fixture section, and where its emitting surface actually stops. Add a local detail showing end caps, connectors, cable exits and fixing positions.

Confirm fixture body length and effective emitting length separately. If part of an end accommodates a cap or connection, bringing the bodies close together may still leave a break between their emitting surfaces. A connector that aligns the bodies also needs a review of the illuminated result.

End construction should be confirmed for the specific model. A published linear fixture end design example identifies translucent end caps and cable exit arrangements as design features for continuous rows. For your project, confirm the corresponding construction from the selected fixture's drawings and samples.

When reviewing the joint, establish:

The intended space between emitting surfaces and the actual end construction.

Whether connectors, cables or cabinet frames occupy the connection area or obstruct light there.

Whether fixtures share the intended height and direction, and how their fixing positions relate to the cabinet.

Which drawings and samples need another review if section lengths, connection positions or end configurations change.

Determine connection space from the selected construction and project requirements. If a change is needed, have the supplier and project team confirm it and update the documents. End caps or connection arrangements should follow that confirmed design.

Concept geometry for distinguishing cabinet divisions, fixture ends and emitting surface ends. Not to scale; confirm actual end construction and connection space from the selected configuration.

3. Review joint positions with the merchandise layout

A cabinet division does not automatically determine where a fixture must be divided. The available options depend on cabinet construction, the selected fixtures and future removal requirements. Review feasible section layouts with the merchandise positions during design.

Imagine two adjacent jewelry cabinets forming one display. If the main product presentation crosses their connection, pay particular attention to illumination in that area. If the cabinets serve distinct display themes, a lighting division may instead correspond to an intentional display boundary. These are two hypothetical layouts; actual construction and viewing requirements determine the choice.

For shelves with concealed fixtures, check whether an edge, support or trim obstructs light at the connection. Even when the joint is hidden, view the merchandise and background from customer positions for noticeable changes in illumination.

On shoe walls and other displays with several shelves, inspect each shelf before comparing the complete arrangement. See our shoe display shelf lighting guide for checks involving merchandise, reflective hardware and shelf positions.

4. Keep adjacent configurations and control settings identifiable

A long counter may contain several fixture sections, sometimes assigned to different control groups. During mockup review, establish the optics and light color configuration of each section, and which settings apply to it.

Start with the agreed normal trading state, then review other states the project needs. Where the selected combination supports dimming, observe adjacent sections at the settings planned for use. For a project without dimming, check the agreed switching and operating states.

If an entire section differs from its neighbor, or becomes progressively darker along its length, record that separately from a localized break at a connection. Share the location, configuration and control state with the supplier and electrical professional responsible for installation. Confirm the issue before deciding what to adjust.

Fixtures with the same nominal color temperature also need comparison with the actual finishes and merchandise. Keep materials, other lighting and viewing conditions as consistent as practical so the team can distinguish differences between sections from changes in the display conditions.

5. Include the actual joint and viewing conditions in the mockup

Inspecting one fixture section can establish its basic appearance. To review a joint, the mockup also needs adjacent sections, actual ends and connection components, and the cabinet construction around the connection.

Add representative merchandise, glass and finishes, then inspect the display from normal viewing positions:

Inspection task

Conditions to include

What to record

Identify physical divisions

Unlit fixtures, ends and the cabinet joint

End positions, connection space and drawing revision

Review emitting surface continuity

Adjacent sections illuminated in the agreed operating state

Locations and viewing directions where breaks or brightness changes appear

Review light on merchandise

Representative products, background and props

Details, shadows and differences near the joint compared with either side

Review reflections in glass or mirrors

Main front and angled views

Whether joints, light sources or their reflections interfere with the merchandise

Review planned control states

Trading settings supported by the selected configuration

Accepted settings and observations that still require attention

Check changes to the proposal

The confirmed revised construction or configuration

Changes made, the scope of further review and acceptance records

In a showcase with front glass, customers may first notice a connection in its reflected image. Use our glass display lighting reflection guide to review the actual lines of sight.

When taking photographs, record camera positions and keep exposure and surrounding lighting as consistent as practical. Photographs help locate observations; viewing the mockup in person remains part of approval.

After changing section lengths, ends, fixture positions or associated components, inspect the revised actual joint. A rendering of one section, or an arrangement without the real connection, cannot replace that review.

Concept mockup showing two customer viewing directions. Review the actual fixture joint, merchandise illumination and reflections with representative cabinet materials and products.

6. Retain the approved joint details for installation and maintenance

After mockup approval, give the fabrication and installation teams the accepted section drawing, end configuration, fixing and cable exit details, and operating settings. If connection positions or cabinet dimensions change on site, establish how they differ from the approved proposal first.

Maintenance arrangements also affect section planning. Confirm which adjacent components, finishes or cabinet parts need to move when one fixture section is removed. Retain identifiers for sections and their associated parts. If one section is later replaced, check its corresponding configuration, then review the connection and appearance alongside its neighbors.

Continuity along a long counter is ultimately assessed in the actual display: whether the visible luminous line, illumination on merchandise and reflections meet the design goal. Retaining joint drawings and mockup approval records gives fabrication, adjustments and later replacement a shared reference.

Through SEEPOSH's customization process, we can discuss linear lighting configurations based on cabinet construction, merchandise and viewing requirements. Contact us with cabinet section dimensions, intended fixture positions and the main display areas so we can establish which connections need review in the mockup.

Frequently asked questions

Will placing two fixtures close together eliminate a dark gap?

Also check where their emitting surfaces end, whether end parts, connectors or cabinet construction obstruct light, and how nearby merchandise is illuminated. Physical proximity is one condition at the joint; confirm the illuminated result with the corresponding mockup.

Should the fixture joint align with the cabinet division?

Decide according to cabinet construction, display boundaries, connection space and future removal requirements. If featured merchandise crosses that position, make illumination near the joint a priority check. Confirm the layout against feasible construction and the accepted result.

Can increasing brightness resolve a dark gap at a joint?

First distinguish an emitting surface break, a structural obstruction and a difference in brightness across an entire section. Increasing overall output does not remove a physical break or an obstruction. Determine the adjustment from the actual joint, then review how the merchandise looks.

What can we inspect before a complete mockup is available?

Start with adjacent fixture sections, the actual connection components and a representative cabinet joint. Record which glass, finishes, merchandise and viewing conditions are still missing. Continue checks relating to the final display once those conditions are available.

Review dark gaps at linear light joints by separating emitting surface breaks, shadows on merchandise and differences between adjacent sections.
